Well offers safe space to domestic abuse victims

Well Pharmacy has said it will offer support and advice for victims of domestic abuse in all of its 750 pharmacies in the UK.

Pharmacies in the chain will allow people in need of help to use their consultation rooms to talk about their situation and connect to professionals who handle cases of domestic abuse over the phone or online.

There was an almost 40 per cent rise in people trying to access support during the first lockdown according to the charity Hestia. About 3,000 people attempted to get help between April and September.

“Domestic abuse includes psychological, physical and financial abuse, all of which can have devastating consequences for the victim,” Well said.

Janice Perkins, Well's pharmacy superintendent, said the chain has been working with Hestia on its 'UK Says No More' initiative to provide “safe spaces” for victims in its pharmacies.

“I am immensely proud of the work our teams do day in and day out supporting vulnerable people in their communities, providing person-centred care and keeping our patients safe and well,” she said.

“That is why I know they will continue to do everything possible to safeguard and support people seeking a safe space.”

Lyndsey Dearlove, head of domestic abuse prevention at Hestia, said: “Businesses have a unique role to play in breaking the silence around domestic abuse and ensuring victims can access the help and support they need.

“Lockdown restrictions due to Covid-19 have provided an opportunity for businesses to step up their response to domestic abuse for their staff and customers.

“We recognise that key workers in pharmacies hold a unique position within the community as a single point of contact for victims. By creating this safe space in Well’s pharmacies, we hope many will be able to safely access support whilst following government guidelines.”
